LivingSocial had a deal for VIP tours for two plus two flights and two pretzles for a good price so I decided to jump on it. Very glad I did. Madhouse is situated just southeast of downtown a couple of blocks east of Principle Park. I really dig the modern look the outside of the building has. There is a patio area outside the front door but on this particular day it was raining so it wasn't being used. Inside they have a quaint taproom tasting area, quaint being small. I think there were 20 seats. Maybe 30 at most if you really squeezed everybody in.Fairly no-frills inside. There was a TV on the wall and a Foosball table but that's about it. For the most part though you are here for the beer, not the ambiance. I really liked that they had a good selection of their barrel aged stuff on tap. I'm much more willing to commit to a $5 glass of beer over a $10+ bomber of beer at the store. And really there wasn't anything that wasn't good. Madhouse is really putting out good beers. The tour took about 30 minutes. Madhouse used to be located in Newton, IA but because they wanted a taproom they picked up shop and moved 30 miles west to Des Moines. The brewing area is really just one room, with their mash tun and brewing kettle in one small area and then they had six or seven fermenting tanks in another area. I was really shocked to learn that they still fill and cap their bomber beers by hand. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and the tour was filled with interesting facts. The people on tour were more than encouraged to ask questions along the way. All in all I was impressed with the location and the tour and especially the beers. They are doing good things at Madhouse.

I have really liked Madhouse beers, since they started brewing! The IPA Hopburst is one of the finest beers made in Iowa in my opinion. They have been bottling brews for awhile now, and you see the beers all over town on taps, but now you can all of them in one spot! I'm super excited they now have a tap house/brewery located just south of the east village in Des Moines! The tap room is fantastic! It has a cool modern vibe with both in door and out door seating, perfect for a beautiful spring night like last night! You can grab any of the 8 brews on tap either in a flight or by the pint! We had a couple different brews last night, the Hopburst, and then we also tried the new high alcohol IPA, both hit the spot! Ashley showed her German roots and ordered a chewy pretzel as well! I love that we have a new place in town we can walk a few blocks and get fantastic beers, a great environment to drink them, and friendly staff to serve them! They also have a TV for sports watching, a foosball table for competing, and the brewing room is open for looking around! A++

An awesome addition to the beer scene here in DSM. I like all their beers. My wife loved the coffee stout. It's located in the middle of the residential neighborhood, but not far from all the happenings in the DSM. They need to update the seatings outside though. I'm not a big fan of their plastic chairs in the patio. The not pretzels weren't bad. I would come back again.

Short version: Fantastic first visit and tour to the Madhouse Brewing Company. Very modern design that makes it easy to see the brewing equipment while you enjoy the flights of beer or pick out a particular beer you want to drink. Staff was friendly, and all of the staff seems very passionate about their jobs here. Fascinating tour and good beer! Long version: Celebrating the Yelp Month of Firsts in my own way! Decided to go to a brewery and see, first-hand, how beer is made. I purchased a LivingSocial deal for Madhouse Brewing Company, and off I went! The building is set-up pretty nicely. First off, the exterior is pretty much gorgeous. They've done a great job setting up the signage to look modern and compliment the warehouse they purchased. When you first walk in, you'll be in the front desk area where they sell their beer and other branded merchandise including beer accessories, clothing, glasses, and more. Past that, you get into their tasting room. It's in a bar-style format except much, much cleaner and there is tons of seating. There is some semi-loud music playing, but it's nothing like a real "bar". It's obvious that the focus in their tasting is on the socialization and the beer itself. Glass walls separate the tasting area and front desk area from the actual brewing area. I'm unsure if they actually do any brewing work late at night when their tasting area is open, but you can see all of the brewing equipment and everything. The outdoor seating is a bit on the "non-fancy" side. Maybe it's because they aren't open every day and don't want to have their outdoor furniture stolen when they're not open, but they're just plastic chairs and plastic tables. About the cheapest-looking outdoor furniture you can usually buy. Lots of seating, though, if you'd like to enjoy the weather. The beer was surprisingly great. I'm told, anyway. I'm not much of a beer drinker, so it tastes a lot like beer to me, but the other person in my party said that the beers were fantastic. He wasn't as fond of some of them, but all of them, in general were really good. They also had bottled versions of their beers available for sale as well. Staff was very friendly. The bartender seemed extremely busy, but he was still friendly and chatting with people at the bar. He did a good job of keeping us updated on what we were drinking as well as the status of the beer tour that we'd be going on later. I was super excited for the tour. It was a good tour too. Their brewery is still pretty small and confined to the single room, but it was really interesting to learn about. For some odd reason, the loud music from the tasting room was actually louder in this room, so it could be hard to hear the tour host at times. The tour host was really happy to answer questions, though, and he explained the brewing process and what all of the various equipment was for. He really seemed to be knowledgeable and passionate about working for the brewery.

This place...is...awesome! Great location close to downtown and the river, but pretty odd at the same time on a dead end road by some factories......really neat looking building and sign outside. The inside of this place is really cool. Wooden, metal, the typical new contemporary style inside a lot of places are trying to strive for. The bar is in the center and the brewery takes up the back of the building. They have a good selection of merchandise and beer to pick from up front too! Their beer really sets them apart though. Rarely do I go to a brewery and thoroughly enjoy every beer they make. Well that all changed when I came here. Even beers I'm not normally a fan of became extremely appreciated. I love everything about this place from the sign outside to the crazy good beer they make. Definitely give it a try when you're in the area.

Nice building, small amount of parking. Hot inside. Only a few beers to choose from. They have room to grow and I hope they continue to do so. friendly staff but ours staff person did not know how to describe one of their beers which is a huge no no in our book since you work there.

Madhouse Brewing has really stepped up its game the last few years and even more so now with the new taproom/brewery in the East Village. Their barrel-aged brews are some of the best Iowa has to offer. I would definitely check out their taproom which has TVs, bean bag boards and a foosball table to enjoy while sipping on some beers. Favorites from my visit were Space Jam (DIPA), El Hefe (Mexican Stout), Barleywine and Borlauger Weisse (Sour)

Groupon had a deal for this place, so my wife and I checked it out. Located just south of downtown's East Village, Madhouse is a great little brewery that serves a nice selection of craft brews. The size is considerably smaller than Confluence, which is not far away, but its a more intimate feel as well. We loved our visit and really enjoyed the hospitality of the management team. A perfect Saturday afternoon to quietly enjoy time with friends or in my case, that special someone.
